Shelby’s Story: TWO

It has been over 2 months since I've started working at SPC, which is strange to say as it feels like I’ve been here longer. I mean that in a good way, I’m not watching the clock and hoping for the day to end, nor am I living in my imagination as an escape. I am living in the moment, not in my head, which is a huge feat for someone who daydreams on the regular. I am happily savoring my day-to-day life, like a fine wine. A lot of what I feel is consistent with my last entry: I'm doing what I like, getting money, and having a good time.
Don’t get me wrong, the anxious voice in my head hasn’t been silent either. Working at a small art driven business during a time where people are looking to replace artists with AI along with general financial struggle (even for people who have traditional financially “safe” jobs) is a risk to say the least. The fact I can pull off being a full time artist without a well off family is insane on its own, the risk factor rings loud and clear in my mind.

The thing here is despite that risk weighing in, I still have confidence and hope for working here. Maybe I’m just crazy (which wouldn’t be wrong to assume), but I’m not feeling the same doom and gloom as I did for the past two years. I can think normally without those annoying pessimistic thoughts obstructing my conscience. I’m able to pay my bills, I’m having a good time, and I think that is enough to stick around at SPC.

An example of what I make outside of SPC
— Shelby

My time working at SPC has felt like something going my way for once. The past 2 years of my life can be best described as a barrage of curveballs thrown my way, while I attempt to catch them without the proper equipment, ultimately being pummeled in the end. From my family splitting, death of loved ones, landing in retail right out of college, and being shoved into an apartment I couldn’t afford on my own, by the end of it I was feeling pretty hopeless about the road ahead. Did I mess up in getting an art degree during a time when the animation industry is in shambles? Will I be stuck doing mundane retail jobs I can’t stand for the rest of my life? The reality of it all was driving me insane.

I harp on this precursor because working at SPC has felt far from that. To put it simply: I like what I do, therefore I will do it. I am getting hands-on experience not only with making comics, but the business side of producing something for clients. I can actually use skills I am good at with my job, and not feel like I am wasting my time or thousands of dollars that I used for my degree for something I'm not passionate about. I finally get to do the things I’ve been itching to do for years.

I don’t dub myself as particularly religious, but I do believe there are “right place, right time” moments, and being able to work at SPC has definitely felt like one of those moments. It’s like adding another piece to the puzzle, it fits perfectly.

As stated in the beginning, I like what I do, therefore I will do it.
